South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc, currently under the chairmanship of Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has its work cut out.

And Gov Malombe has promised to lead his colleagues; Governor Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos & Makueni’s Mutula Kilonzo Jnr in ensuring that SEKEB achieves the much desired socio-economic and political growth in the region.

Speaking during their second summit meeting in Kitui at the weekend, the three regional governors resolved to develop a strategic plan for SEKEB meant to achieve the shared dream in addressing the common challenges in the region.

The governors said their focus will centre on improved infrastructure, industrialization, water security, improved health provision for the people and trade partnerships.

Other areas of concern for the county bosses include climate smart agriculture as a way of addressing food insecurity in the region, exploitation of mineral resources and economic empowerment of the locals.

The county bosses noted that they will champion for the completion of Konza Techno City, the multipurpose Twake Dam as well as lobby for more development projects from the national government to the three counties with a direct impact to the local residents.

In this drive, signature projects will be initiated and completed in each of the three counties; key among them being renal units for both Kitui and Mwingi Level IV hospitals, a full fledged cancer treatment centre at Machakos Level V hospital and a trauma centre at Makindu Level IV hospital along the busy Nairobi – Mombasa road.

Since our last meeting held on 13th December 2022, we have initiated the process to operationalize the Bloc and smoothen its operations. We have nominated members to a Panel of Experts and eminent persons to provide technical, intellectual and professional advice to SEKEB,” announced Mutula Kilonzo Jnr while reading the joint statement during a media briefing.

The Governors noted that the bloc will continue to engage with the National Government to initiate and complete mega dams projects across the region. These will address the perennial water problems as well as provide water for both irrigation and generation of hydro-power.

For Kitui County, Governor Malombe has come up with a water master plan – which includes surface dams, sand dams, water pans, boreholes, rock catchments - to make the county water secure. Governor Malombe has also prevailed on the national government to revive Umaa Dam that stalled many years back.
