Kitui  County Minister for Energy, Environment, Climate Change, Forestry, Natural and Mineral Resources, Mr. Richard Mwendandu, Wednesday hosted a team from Strengthening Forestry Sector Development and Community Resilience to Climate Change through Sustainable Forest Management and Landscape Restoration (SFS-CORECC) project.

The five-year project, which is being implemented in eight counties, including Kitui, aims to promote sustainable forest management, landscape restoration, and climate change mitigation and adaptation in Kenya.

A key focus of the project is to promote commercial forestry in pilot counties and to strengthen technical support for Melia volkensii, also known as the Mukau tree, which is native to the region. Additionally, the project aims to study value addition and marketing of Melia volkensii products, with the goal of enhancing the economic potential of this valuable resource.

The team explored the development of a framework to upscale the project, with a particular emphasis on supporting the establishment of Melia volkensii woodlots within both county and gazetted forests. This approach is expected to catalyze government plantations and create a monitoring system for private enterprises, thereby contributing to sustainable forest management and landscape restoration efforts.

The team members leading the project, including Ms. Ayaha Mochizuki and Mr. Joseph Njiguya, were in attendance, along with the County Chief Officer in charge of Environment, Forestry Mr David Soi Masai and the County Forest Conservator.

The project marks an important step forward in the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable forest management and enhance community resilience to climate change in Kitui County.

"The commitment of the County government of Kitui and its partners to this initiative demonstrates a dedication to preserving and protecting the county’s natural resources for future generations," Waziri Mwendandu explained.
